The Boddie Name in Bibb County

The Boddie family was rooted in Bibb County soil before the railroad named Brent and before the town incorporated. Through land and literacy, church and community, steel and service — the name has endured.

Our parents and family forebears, Spurgeion Boddie Jr. and Evelyn Elma Lewis Boddie, carried that legacy forward. Spurgeion Jr. did not wait for permission. When a bank in the area would not hire people who looked like him, he went church to church through the Lilly Star District and told Black families to move their money. They did. The bank closed.
